Since its founding in 1984 as the American Musical Theater Festival, the mission of the Prince Music Theater has been to nurture and develop the unique American art form of music theater of the highest artistic caliber over a wide aesthetic range. Over the last 22 years, the Prince has included opera, music drama, musical comedy and experimental work in productions. Above all, the Prince is dedicated to artists of our time seeking to break new ground, while also celebrating the legacy of the creative mavericks and pioneers who have forged the American musical theater.
The Prince draws upon operatic and popular traditions as well as European, African, Asian and South American forms, new work and new voices take center stage. The Prince also explore ways in which other media such as film, video and new technologies can infuse and interact with performance work. Two constituencies are served: a local audience of all ages and backgrounds; and a national community of artists and organizations dedicated to creating a body of contemporary American work as a legacy for the future.
