About the Operas

Philadelphia Fringe FestivalPhilly Fringe 2008

The Philly Fringe is our "unfiltered" festival, where new and established artists of all kinds may choose to present their own work, free of a selection process. Most Philly Fringe artists live and work in Philadelphia.

Festival Mission
The Festival mission is to commission, develop, and present a wide range of high-quality contemporary performance.
The Festival hopes to:
•  Support artists (Philadelphia-based, regional, national, international) who create this work.
•  Challenge, stimulate, entertain and educate the diverse audiences who see this work.
•  Provide opportunities for - and invest in - local artists in a way that leads to the continued growth and health of the local and
regional performing arts community.
•  Engage fully in the global dialogue about contemporary performance.

ConNEXTions - The Next Generation of OperaGiven the mission of the Philadelphia Live Arts and Philly Fringe, it's easy to see why Center City Opera Theater considers this to be a perfect marriage, especially for our production of new works.
Center City Opera Theater requested submissions, nationally, from composers that were seeking to an opportunity to workshop unperformed operatic works. Considered a golden opportunity by composers to have an opportunity to make final refinements at such a distinct and nationally recognized festival, hundreds of submissions were received. From these, the field was narrowed to ten by a distinguished panel that included composer Richard Belcastro (Chamber Music Now! Executive Director); Barbara Silverstein, conductor; Ron Vigue, composer; Lloyd Nerenberg, dramaturg; and General & Artistic Director Andrew Kurtz. From this field, three short works were chosen. All three operas will be performed at each performance with total running time being less than two hours, including intermission. This is a rare opportunity to hear the next generation of opera - today.
