in-school arts education initiative OPERAtunities in Education
works with students and teachers in the tri-county area, providing
educational materials, classroom visits by Center City Opera Theater staff
and artists, special performances, and discounted tickets to regular shows.

APPRENTICE PROGRAMS 2008/2009
Our Artist Apprentice and Studio Programs are designed as educational experiences for the area’s young singers, pianists, and directors with one of the region's most dynamic professional opera companies. Only the most talented singers will be selected, by audition, to participate in these programs. There will be a maximum of 20 singers and 2 pianists invited to be a part of the programs. Auditions for both programs will be held in late September and early October 2008. The programs start late October 2008. Please note, this program is based in Philadelphia and there is no travel reimbursements offered for either program.
APPRENTICE ARTIST PROGRAM 08/09
This program is meant to give practical professional experience for young singers, covering every aspect required of a professional singer: resume preparation, website preparation & auditioning; acting and stage movement; legal counsel & contracts; vocal production via coaching; role preparation, etc, all culminating with live performance opportunities, including a scene program. Other opportunities will be possible within our main stage, Opera Encounters and ConNEXTions productions either in smaller roles or as a member of the chorus. All singers will, at some point, participate in outreach events. Generally there is one or two apprentice sessions each month. Accepted singers must commit to attending all scheduled sessions and performance assignments, unless excused by the General Director. Apprentice artists are not charged any fees for participation or coachings; nor do they receive any financial compensation as part of their participation.
STUDIO ARTIST PROGRAM 08/09
This program is meant to give practical professional experience for professional singers who have already participated in Center City Opera Theater’s Apprentice Artist program or have participated in one of the major apprentice program offered by other opera companies. Singers in this program will be expected to be at a higher level of career preparedness. Studio artists will be invited to participate in all Apprentice sessions, but also will be an integral part of several educational outreach projects during the 2008-2009 year, giving them regular performing experience in front of audiences. Other opportunities will be possible within our main stage, Opera Encounters and ConNEXTions productions. Generally there will be one or two studio artist sessions each month. Accepted singers must commit to attending all scheduled sessions and performance assignments, unless excused by the General Director.

The Center City Opera Theater has a varied internship program, primarily working with Graduate & Undergraduate students studying at University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, Temple University, University of the Arts, Community College of Philadelphia, and other higher education institutions in the Philadelphia area. Internship possibilities exist in all areas of company management and artistic interests. College credit can be arranged depending on your individual institution. Typical internships positions include, but are not limited to, marketing, development, stage management, and conducting. Advanced High School students have also interned with the Center City Opera Theater in more directed activities. Generally internships are unpaid.
